So How Good is The >Topeak JoeBlow Floor Bicycle Pump?

Performance

When this pump is actually connected properly to the valve it works very well and it is easy to pump up tires to 125-130 PSI. The oversize handles are very good, but the pump is very top heavy and so it is quite unstable to use when pumping. There are a number of locations on this pump where the seals can deteriorate and so this pump requires maintenance in the form of lubricant and keeping an eye on the seals in order to maintain the performance.

Nozzles and Valves

The Topeak JoeBlow floor bicycle pump is fitted with a SmartHead nozzle. This nozzle is supposed to ’detect’ the type of valve it is being used on. I have found to be ok with Presta valves, but have struggled to use it on Schrader valves. The pump also comes with a needle and cone adapter for other applications, which work fine.

Pressure Gauge

The pressure gauge is situated at the top of the pump and is easy to see. However, because this pump is so top heavy it is very easy to knock it over and it seems to invariably fall onto the pressure gauge so it is very easy to damage the gauge. The gauge is relatively accurate initially, but over time it has slowly drifted off and now, after a year of use, is around 10 PSI out at 110 PSI.

Durability and Warranty

The main body of the Topeak JoeBlow floor bicycle pump is made of chrome and I have found this part of the pump to be fine with no obvious problems. I have had a number of problems with various seals and have replaced them easily enough, however for a pump of this price I would not have expected this level of maintenance to be required. Repair kits are available from the manufacturer and are relatively easy to use, but again, I would not expect to need them within 3 years of buying the pump.

Applications

I have been able to use this pump on both Presta and Schrader valves, but Presta valves are much easier to use. The pump is great for other uses as well as it comes with a needle adapter and a cone adapter for balls and general inflatables. This is very much a workshop pump, or one for the car. I have tried using it on car tires a couple of times, but due to the connection issues I’ve had with the Schrader valves I wouldn’t want to rely on using this on car or motorbike tires.

Ease of Use

The overall concept of the pump means that it should be very easy to use. However the lever that is used to clamp onto the valve has proved to be quite dangerous and has given me several blood blisters from trapping my finger in the lever mechanism. The lever flips down with a huge amount of force after inflating tires and as it sits in a groove it is very easy to pinch skin with it. The nozzle can also be difficult to remove from valves.

Value for Money

At over $70 I would expect to have fewer issues with this pump. While the overall design is nice and the metal parts of the pump are well-made, the construction quality and other small design features, such as the clamp-on lever, have left me somewhat disappointed with this pump. I would also expect an expensive pump like this to have separate nozzles for Schrader and Presta valves to give a better lifetime.

Final Verdict

Topeak JoeBlow Pro Floor Pump

Overall I am somewhat disappointed with this pump. Although it is very easy to pump with once everything is in place, there are too many issues with the overall build quality and the use of a SmartHead for me to be truly satisfied with this pump. Great when it works, but I am not enjoying the maintenance to keep it going.
