So How Good is The Topeak Master Blaster Bicycle Hand Pump?

Performance

If you are looking for something that is very light weight, but still able to pump up road bicycle tires, the Topeak Master Blaster bicycle hand pump could be what you are looking for. For a mini-pump it does pump pretty efficiently, but it still takes some effort to get tires up to decent pressure. The fold out carbon handle really makes life a lot easier during pumping. At 0.15 lb in weight, this is a definite option for anyone looking to cut down weight for races or just for long distance rides. I have used this as both a racing back-up to CO2 and as a general pump for tire reinflation after punctures. The only reason I don’t use this as a primary pump for racing is due to the speed advantage of CO2, however these mini-pumps will never leave you stuck, unlike an empty CO2 canister.

Nozzles and Valves

The mini-pump has a single nozzle type that is compatible with Presta valves only. Considering that it is a miniature frame pump, this is perfectly acceptable as it can be matched to the valves on the bicycle being ridden. The attachment is through direct attachment from the bottom of the barrel onto the valve. Therefore there is a risk, particularly on the Presta valves with longer stems, of causing damage to the valve if you’re not careful.

Applications

This mini-pump is designed for a specific application, which is to provide a very light weight hand pump for racing bikes that have Presta valves and that may need tire pressures up to around 130 PSI. The pump is designed as a frame pump to be carried on the bike when it is being ridden and so cuts out all off the peripherals found on a floor pump. So, for a frame pump, this is a great little pump, but it does not make a good option for general usage.

Ease of Use

The Topeak Master Blaster bicycle hand pump is pretty easy to use, particularly with the fold out handle. The only thing really to watch with this pump is the connection with the valve, which can cause damage if you are not careful with your piston action and pump support. Clearly this size of pump will not have an integrated gauge, so you will also need to carry a separate gauge to check your tire pressure.

Value for Money

At $50 this is an expensive pump, however it has been designed for a specific task, which it is well-designed for. If you are looking for a dedicated, lightweight frame pump for racing, or long distance cycles, this will provide you with everything you need, but it does come at a price.

Final Verdict

Topeak Master Blaster Micro Rocket CBT Carbon Fiber Road Bicycle Hand Pump

In my opinion this small pump is ideal for anyone who cycles a lot. The weight of the pump is so light you won’t even notice it and it can provide you with the tire pressures you need. The main part of the design I would like to change would be to attach the securing rubber O-ring to the bracket to reduce the risk of losing both it and potentially the pump. Overall this is a very useful pump for racing bicycles.
