So How Good is The Topeak MasterBlaster Bike Mini Pump?

Performance

The pumping performance of the Topeak MasterBlaster bike mini pump is pretty good because it pumps on both the in and out stroke. This makes the filling time for a tire a fair bit shorter than for single action pumps. I should note that although the pump is rated to 120 PSI, I have never been able to get close to that and usually max out at about 80 or 90 PSI. So I would say that this pump is ideal for emergency inflation out on the road and it is more than good enough to get enough air in a tire in order to get me home, but I only have it for this purpose and have a decent floor pump at home for general use.

Nozzles and Valves

The pump has a SmartHead nozzle, which is compatible with both Presta and Schrader valves. I have had a few of these in the past and have found that if this sort of nozzle is regularly used with Schrader valves that the seal can get worn and so can be difficult to use with Presta valves. I tend to stick to just using this with Presta valves or Schrader valves, but it is useful to have the capability to use with either for emergencies.

Applications

The Topeak MasterBlaster bike mini pump is very much designed as an ’on the road’ type of pump and it is great for use in emergencies or when you get a flat. It is a mini-pump and so it won’t pump up your tires quickly so it’s not an option for racing bikes, or time trials on mountain bikes, but it is ideal for recreational use when you’re out on the road or the trail. The dual use of the nozzle does make this a versatile pump and it can be great for taking on family cycles where there is a mixture of valves types and the tire pressures are not as high as for other types of cycle.

Ease of Use

The pump is ok to use and it connects to the valves fine. The main issue I have with this is the shortness of the handle that you use to pump with. I usually find that I struggle to get a decent grip, especially when getting to higher pressures. However, I would say that this is unlikely to be a problem for women with smaller hands and kids. The thumb lock is useful for holding the pump in place while pumping, but I have found that you need to take care when using this with long stemmed Presta valves because if you jerk the valve too hard it is possible to rip it.

Value for Money

This pump is priced at about $19, which is a little more than similar pumps. This pump contains more metal parts than other models and so is likely to be longer lasting than some of the cheaper models. However make sure you fix the bracket in a suitable place because the side-mounting position I originally used on my mountain bike meant that it got bumped a lot and the bracket broke fairly quickly.

Final Verdict

Topeak Mini MasterBlaster DX Bike Mini Pump

The Topeak MasterBlaster bike mini pump is a pretty solid pump and the dual action pumping means that it is a good choice as an emergency pump. It won’t get your road tires up to optimal pressures, but it will certainly get them high enough to get you home, which is exactly what it was designed for. It isn’t too expensive and so I would use this as a general purpose emergency pump quite happily.
