So How Good is The SKS Supershort Mini Bike Tire Pump?

Performance

When it comes to mini-pumps there are always going to be performance limitations, but there are also going to be mitigating factors that can make a pump suitable for use. This supershort pump offers something slightly different to other mini-pumps as it can inflate a tire to 90 PSI while also being in a tiny form factor, which makes it very easy to carry. I have found that this pump does what it needs to, but you should not expect miracles. It does take some time to get a tire up to pressure and I wouldn’t like to try keeping a tire up to pressure that has a medium leak on it as I suspect I would spend more time pumping that cycling. However for inflating after a puncture or just topping off a tire, this is ideal.

Nozzles and Valves

The SKS Supershort mini bike tire pump has a reversible nozzle so it is compatible with both Presta and Schrader valves. I have only used it on Schrader valves, but I have used it on a friend’s Presta valve. The inversion procedure is pretty simple as it just involves screwing off the front of the nozzle, turning round the two elements inside and then screwing the nozzle front back on again.

Applications

The pressure rating on this pump makes it a great choice for mountain bikes and low end recreational bikes, but it would definitely not be up to the job of keeping high end tires inflated to the required pressures. The short stroke means that it can take a while to get pressures up to where they need to be, but for emergency use it is ideal, or if you use CO2 canisters it also makes a great tool to top off a tire with an extra couple of PSI.

Ease of Use

The way that the handle is formed is great because it means there is no chance of pinching your hand, which I have done on a regular basis with the hinged style of handle. It is pretty easy to use and connects well with both Schrader and Presta valves. As with all hoseless pumps you do have to be careful, particularly with long stem Presta valves, so as not to damage the valve. Pumping up a tire can take a while, which can be frustrating, but it gets the job done in the end.

Final Verdict

SKS Germany Supershort Bike Tire Pump

As an emergency pump that can tuck away into small pouches or take up less room on a bike, this is a great pump. It is definitely not an everyday pump as it takes too long to pump up tires, but it is ideal for those times when you are in the middle of nowhere with a flat and it is the perfect accessory to carry with your emergency tire kit to get you back on the road or trail. I wouldn’t use this on my road bike, but for a small and light emergency pump on my mountain bike, this does the job.
