So How Good is The Planet Bike Zeppelin CO2 Cartridge Pump?

Performance

I have found this pump to perform fairly well, although I have found that if I do not get an ideal seal with the valve then some gas escapes out of the system when higher pressures are reached. Also, I have found that the regulator can stick if you just leave it to empty a complete cartridge into a tire. While that is the ideal method of filling a tire, it can lead to regulator getting stuck. However, most of the time I don’t have any problems filling either my road bike or my mountain bike tires.

Nozzles and Cartridges

The Planet Bike Zeppelin CO2 cartridge pump comes with a nozzle that can screw to either Presta or Schrader valves. The pump uses threaded 16g cartridges, which come with a foam protector to help avoid getting burnt by the cartridge during discharge.

Size and Mounting

The overall pump size is 10cm in length, which is relatively short, however I have found that it is safer and easier to store the pump in two sections, the regulator head and the cartridge and then assemble them together when I actually need them. The size of the pump is small enough to fit into my saddle bag along with the rest of my emergency tool kit. The Red Zeppelin does not come with any sort of frame mounting kit. Due to the small size of the pump this isn’t a huge problem unless there is not enough space in the saddle bag, then there is nowhere else to store it.

Applications

I have used the Planet Bike Zeppelin CO2 cartridge pump to inflate both road and mountain bike tires and it works effectively for both. Once you have inflated tires a few times you will know whether you can just go ahead and empty a cartridge into the tire and not have to worry about the regulator, which makes filling a tire much easier. The pump features both Schrader and Presta connectivity and so could potentially be used on other types of tires, but it is designed for use on bicycle tires and may not be suitable for other tires, such as motorcycle or car tires.

Ease of Use

The Red Zeppelin, for the most part, is easy to use. I have had a few problems with the regulator sticking, but other than that it is a simple process to inflate a tire. Ensure the red valve is closed, connect the cartridge, connect to the valve and then open the red valve. There will always be a bit of gas leakage so road tires generally inflate up to about 95-100 PSI, which although is not ideal for racing, it is enough to get you home and to a floor pump.

Value for Money

At around $16 this pump is reasonable value for money. The regulator mechanism comes supplied with two gas cartridges and also a foam protector, which not only protects your hands from the cold, it also stops the cartridges from clanking together in the saddle bag. Overall this is reasonable good value for money.

Final Verdict

Planet Bike Red Zeppelin CO2 Cartridge Pump

I like this pump in that it is very simple and does not have any complex bit that increase the chances of it failing. It is my go to emergency pump and it is only because I do not want to carry a whole collection of cartridges that I still carry a frame pump as well. There are a couple of features that I am not keen on, the sticky regulator being one of them, but for the price it does the job.
