The Slime Comp 12 Volt air compressor is a great example of a cordless inflator designed for high pressure use and is especially useful for both bicycle and car tire inflation. As with all pumps, it has its pros and cons, which you can check out below.
- Cordless tire inflator
- Usable as 12V power supply
- Color-coded battery life indicator
- Integrated storage for cables
- Not suitable for high volume tasks
- Requires management of lead acid battery
So How Good is The Slime Comp 12 Volt Air Compressor?
This tire inflator performs very well as a compressor in order to pump up and top off higher pressure inflators, such as car tires, bicycle tires and balls. However, it is not a good option for high volume items, such as airbeds, rafts and the like. The lead acid battery will hold its charge for long periods of time, so if it looked after properly the battery will be reliable.

The Slime Comp 12 Volt Air Compressor contains a 7 Amp-Hour internal battery. While this is fine for occasional use, it will not provide you with enough power for heavier, regular use. Also, I have learned from experience that lead acid batteries require different charging routines from other types of rechargeable battery in order to optimize their outputs. If left to charge for too long, or if allowed to discharge completely, you will find that the battery will either not hold a charge for long, or won’t hold a charge at all. If you do ruin the battery in this way, you can easily replace it, either with another 7 Amp-Hour battery, or you can upgrade to an 8.5 Amp-Hour. It is worth buying a decent SLA charger if you do this though.

Nozzles and Valves
The pump comes with a number of nozzles that will connect with Schrader valves and that can be used for pumping up balls. There are also nozzles that can be connected to more general inflatables, such as rafts and airbeds. The pump does not come with a nozzle that can be used with Presta valves.

As with most built-in gauges I have found this one to be ok for estimating a tire pressure, but I still use a manual pressure gauge in order to get an accurate reading. When the pump is off I can get an estimate of the pressure to within about ±2 PSI, but the needle vibrates so much during operation that it is not worth trying to get a reading while the pump is on. An inline pump, or pumping up to a pressure a little higher than the one required are easy solutions to this.

The pump is great for use on car tires and balls and also on bicycle tires as it has a high maximum PSI rating of 230. Although it doesn’t come with a Presta valve connector, I have used this with a Schrader valve adapter and it pumps up my road bicycle tires to the requisite 125 PSI without any problems. I have, on occasion tried to use this for high volume applications, but it just takes way too long, and in fairness this type of pump is really not suited to the high volume inflation tasks.

Ease of Use
The Slime Comp 12 Volt air compressor itself is very easy to use, especially with the battery life indicator, but there are a few things to watch out for. The first is that the pump is not operated while it is plugged into a charging point. This is just the first thing that will damage the battery and reduce its life. Also, the battery should never be fully discharged (unlike NiCad rechargeables) nor should it be left permanently on charge.

Value for Money
At the $50 price mark, this pump does offer a lot of capability. It is ideal for high pressure tasks and if the battery is maintained properly will provide reasonable performance. The battery can also be charged from both a 120V AC outlet, or a 12V DC outlet.

For high pressure tasks this portable, cordless pump is great. The high PSI rating makes it perfect for both vehicle tires and also for all types of bicycle tires, just make sure you buy a Presta to Schrader adapter if you have Presta valves on your tires.
