Truly portable pumps can be hard to find and the ActiveTool Airman Compressor offers both complete cordless operation and also multi-purpose functionality. In order to assess whether it is the pump for you here are a few of the pros and cons I have found.
- Light weight
- Versatile with a range of nozzles and adapters
- Cordless with rechargeable NiCad 9V battery
- Provides up to 120 PSI
- No replaceable parts (including battery)
So How Good is The ActiveTool Airman Compressor?
The performance of this inflator is great and it provides a quick and easy way to pump up tires on the go, as I found when I got a flat recently, and also for pumping up all sorts of other inflatables around the house, at the beach, and so on.

The main power source is the integrated NiCad rechargeable battery. From experience I have found that the lifetime and the ability to hold charge of these batteries can vary greatly depending on how you use them and how you recharge them. With a good charging regimen, I have found the battery life to be pretty good. I feel that the main down side is that when the battery does start giving up there is no way to replace it. The pump is still usable without the battery by using the cigarette lighter adapter, which can also be used for charging. The mains connector is only for charging.

Nozzles and Valves
The ActiveTool Airman Compressor comes with a number of nozzles that makes it compatible with many different types of valve and inflatable. There is the standard Schrader nozzle for connecting to car tires and some bicycle tires, a needle nozzle for inflating balls and also nozzles for blowing up balloons and items such as airbeds and exercise balls. The pump is not directly compatible with Presta bicycle valves, but from experience electric pumps rarely have this type of nozzle included, however I have found adapters that allow the use of the Schrader nozzle on a Presta valve.

The pressure gauge is simple and can provide a rough estimate of the pressure that something has been pumped up to. I have found that if I want an accurate pressure reading that I need a manual pressure gauge, but the gauge on the pump is good enough for most applications.

The ActiveTool Airman Compressor is, overall, a great general purpose pump. The 120 PSI maximum pressure is easily enough for most applications, particularly for car tires, sports balls, such as basketballs and footballs, and also for exercise balls. Where this pump falls down a little is for its use with some bicycles. If your bicycle is just for recreational use 120 PSI will be plenty, however if you have a bicycle that you use for long distances or races, the tires are more likely to be high pressure tires, which will require, firstly, a Presta valve adaptor, and secondly, more than 120 PSI. So it is just something to watch out for if you are looking for a general purpose pump that will also be useful for all bicycles.

Ease of Use
This is probably one of the easiest pumps I have ever used. It is simply a case of attach it, push the button and off it goes. It is probably the only air pump I have encountered that is fully usable with just one hand.

Value for Money
This pump is one of the more expensive pumps that I have bought, but the convenience of having a completely cordless air pump that I can use on a whole range of items goes some way to justifying the price.
