For light and medium inflation tasks, the Viair 70P portable compressor is a good option to consider. It is a general purpose high pressure compressor, but before you commit to buying you will want to check out the pros and cons below.
- Rated up to 100 PSI
- Brass screw-on connector
- Fast and relatively quiet operation
- Requires a 15A rated 12V outlet
So How Good is The Viair 70P Portable Compressor?
The Viair 70P portable compressor is designed to be a portable tire pump, and this is exactly what it is. It performs well in general inflation situations and for tires up to the specified size. It can be quite easy to push this little pump beyond its design parameters and blow a fuse either in the pump, or in the car powering it.

The pump is powered using a 12V DC cable that plugs into a car 12V power outlet. You do need to make sure that the socket is rated up to 15A otherwise you will find that fuses will blow. It is possible to use this with a portable battery or connect directly to the car battery using an adapter if connecting through the 12V outlet is an issue.

Nozzles and Valves
The nozzle on the pump is a brass screw-on nozzle suitable for Schrader valves, which are the valves found on car tires, and also many mountain bikes and children’s bikes. I have found that the screw-on nozzle allows less air to escape when attaching and disconnecting the nozzle from the valve. The pump also comes with a needle nozzle for inflating balls and two plastic adapters for use with general inflatables, such as exercise balls and airbeds.

I have found the pressure gauge to be ok, but it is not accurate enough if a specific pressure is required. The scale is divided into 2 PSI divisions and so it is difficult to resolve to any more specific pressure than this. I have also found that the built-in pressure gauge is a couple of PSI out and so will generally overinflate and then double check with my manual pressure gauge.

This little pump is a really useful emergency pump for cars, but because it is so small it is not powerful enough to deal with larger tires, especially truck tires. It is great for inflating kids’ bikes and mountains bikes because they have Schrader valves and only need up to about 50 PSI in them. This is definitely not the pump you need if you want to be pumping up road bike tires because firstly you would need an adapter for the Presta valves and secondly 100 PSI is not going to be enough pressure for a good road bicycle tire in order to get the best performance out of it and ride the bicycle safely.

Ease of Use
The Viair 70P portable compressor is really easy to use as it plugs straight into the cigarette lighter in a car and then it’s just a case of connecting the nozzle to the valve and switching it on. The only thing to watch really is the amp rating. I accidentally plugged this into a cigarette lighter in my car with only a 12A fuse, which blew, so you will have to make sure that the outlet you are using is rated to 15A. The bag it comes with is very handy for packing the pump away neatly and not losing the nozzles, however a little pocket to put them in would be useful rather than having them rolling around loose in the bag.

Value for Money
For $40 this pump is pretty good. As something to keep in the car for emergency inflation of tires it is ideal. It is also great for taking on trips in order to pump up mountain bike tires and the odd inflatable, but as it is designed for high pressure operation don’t be surprised if these high tasks take a while.

Overall I have found this pump to be perfect for the fairly light use I have put it to, which includes topping up my car tires, keeping mountain bike tires topped off and for inflating a few basketballs and footballs every now and again. I would not use this for heavy duty use or for road bicycle tire inflation as it just isn’t designed to be used in that way.
