Planet Bike Shockmate Suspension Pump

The Planet Bike Shockmate suspension pump is designed for use to pump up suspension forks. Some forks require very high pressures and this pump is rated up to 400 PSI and so is ideal for the job. With the anti-leak valve release this pump could be the option you are looking for. As with all pumps there are pros and cons:

So How Good is The Planet Bike Shockmate Suspension Pump?

Performance

This pump does exactly what I expected it to. The anti-leak valve arrangement takes a little bit of getting used to, but I simple followed the instructions and easily pumped up my shocks to 250 PSI. The bleed valve is a little bit on the severe side as it is very easy to lose 50 PSI in one go if you’re not careful.

Nozzles and Chucks

The nozzle that the Planet Bike Shockmate suspension pump comes with is suitable for use with all high pressure suspension systems and the anti-leak valve arrangement means that the suspension system will remain at the pressure you have pumped it up to. It can be used on systems that require lower pressures, but I wouldn’t use it on shocks that require less than 50 PSI. It is possible to use this pump on both Schrader and Presta valves, however to use on Presta valves a small insert needs to be taken out of the nozzle, which is easily lost. Also, although this pump is ideal for high pressures, it is not very fast for larger volumes and so may not be the best option for tires.

Size and Mounting

The Shockmate is a relatively small pump and the hose folds neatly against the pump to make the overall storage size compact. The pump can be attached to a bike frame, however it does not come with a mount as it is more aimed at occasional use for updating suspension pressures. The small pump size also means that the pumping volume is quite small and so is not a good choice for tire inflation.

Pressure Gauge and PSI Rating

The pressure gauge is great for high pressure applications as the pump is rated up to 400 PSI. The divisions on the pump are in 10 PSI increments, which can make hitting an exact PSI pretty difficult, but I have found it to be close enough to pump up my shocks. The scale only starts at 30 PSI, so I would avoid using it for any applications below this pressure.

Applications

I have found this pump to be ideal for maintaining the pressure in my mountain bike suspension as it needs to be around 250 PSI. The pump is also small enough to fit in my pack and I have used it on the odd occasion when I need to just top off my tires by a few PSI. I have seen the pump used on Presta valves and it works fine, but it does involve the removal of a piece out of the nozzle and if you lose it you won’t be able to use the pump for shocks or Schrader valves any longer.

Ease of Use

As long as you read the instructions before you try to use this pump for the first time it is very easy to use. There is a specific order in which you will have to attach and detach pieces of the nozzle in order to get the anti-leak to work properly, however the process is simple and easy to get used to after a couple of uses.

Final Verdict

Planet Bike Shockmate Bicycle Suspension Pump

I like the Planet Bike Shockmate suspension pump as it can easily deal with the shock pressures I need and it can also double up as an emergency pump for my tires as well, which I use in conjunction with my CO2 pump. The gauge is clear, although the divisions are in blocks of 10 PSI, so this is not the pump to use for very accurate pressures. The anti-leak valve is great and works really well.
