So How Good is The Zefal Suspension Pump?

Performance

I have found the Zefal suspension pump to perform very well on the shocks that it is compatible with. It is easy to connect and pump up to the 250 PSI that I require. Unfortunately I have had issues with being able to connect this pump to various Fox shocks and so do not use it on those shocks.

Nozzles and Chucks

The screw-on nozzle on a rotating hose is easy to use in order to get a decent connection to the Schrader shock valves. The pump incorporate a pressure release valve for fine tuning the pressure, which is fairly gentle in the speed of pressure release. There is leak reduction technology incorporated into the nozzle that limits the amount of air lost during disconnection to a couple of PSI.

Size and Mounting

The pump is about average in size for a folding pump with gauge. It is not really suitable for frame mounting if you want to take it with you when you are out cycling because there is no cover for the nozzle, which can easily get clogged with water, mud and grit. I generally keep it in my pack when cycling as it is small enough and light enough to fit into my pack along with the rest of my emergency gear.

Pressure Gauge and PSI Rating

The Zefal suspension pump is rated up to 360 PSI, which is more than enough for the shocks that I use. The pressure gauge is a little larger than some, which makes it pretty easy to determine the actual pressure reading to within about 5 PSI. The gauge is divided into 10 PSI increments. As this pump is designed for high pressure use I would not use the pressure gauge for anything below about 30 PSI as it is just not designed to indicate these pressures accurately.

Applications

I have found this pump to be really good for getting to some awkwardly placed valves and it is great, in general, for use with most shocks. However I did find that it had problems with my Fox shocks and so I haven’t been able to use it with those. It is great for high pressure shocks, but I wouldn’t use this as a dedicated pump for low pressure applications, such as motorbike shocks, because it just isn’t designed to do that sort of job with accuracy. It can be used in an emergency easily enough for both motorbike shocks and also for tire inflation if you have Schrader valves.

Ease of Use

As I have already mentioned I could not get this pump to work with Fox shocks, but for all other shocks I have used this on, some of my own and also some of my friends’, I have found this pump to be very easy to use and I could easily achieve the pressures I was aiming for. The pressure release is pretty good as well as it doesn’t just dump 50 PSI with the slightest press.

Value for Money

At $35 this pump is slightly more expensive that the average pump. As long as you don’t have Fox shocks this pump is good value for money as it is robustly built and has a great PSI rating and decent gauge.

Final Verdict

Zefal Z 360 PSI Bicycle Suspension Pump

Overall I find the Zefal suspension pump to be a great part of my bicycle maintenance kit. I use it regularly in the shop, but it is also small and light enough to tuck in my pack for use when I’m out on the trails. The only disappointment was its lack of compatibility with Fox shocks, but other than that it’s a great pump.
